What can be done to reduce the appearance of scuffs on natural leather?

Natural leather is beautiful, with qualities that only get better with age. That said, just like the best of us, sometimes it gets rubbed the wrong way. When that happens to people, we may get surly for a little while. When it happens to leather, it may get scuffed instead.

So what can be done?

If it’s just a surface scuff, there are a couple of things you can do:

  1. If you have a hairdryer, set it to “warm” and heat up the scuffed surface, and then use your fingers/thumb to massage the leather, which should reduce the appearance of the scuff;
  2. You can also (or as well), apply a bit of unscented petroleum jelly to the scuffed area, rubbing it in with circular motions with your fingers. Let it sit for about 10 mins, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.

Hopefully that will tone the scuff down to the point where it blends into the irregularities of the natural leather.

With use, the leather should form a nice patina and minor scuffs will add a bit of character.
